I love Christmas and I love Christmas ornaments. When I was just a little guy, I can remember being at my grandmother's house watching her make homemade Christmas ornaments. She was quite the arts and crafts hobbyist. I was always fascinated with what she could create with a few simple items such as a cardboard cylinder from a toilet paper roll, and a styrofoam ball. She would put them all together and suddenly, like magic, a Christmas ornament! Well, those memories stayed with me through my life and are part of the reason I do what I do today. I love to make things. Thanks Grandma!
In 1991, the Phoenix Art Museum commissioned me to make 100 Christmas ornaments as part of a fund raising effort for their Festival of Trees Exhibition. As you can imagine, I jumped at the opportunity. I wanted to create something that was a reflection of my studio work but also embodied the true spirit of Christmas. I eventually came up with a design that looked like an architectural angel. They sold out on the first day and I went on to make 50 more ornaments that year. Since then I've strived to produce a new ornament each year based on either an angel or star theme to continue this tradition. This years ornament is the 14th in an ongoing series and is modeled after the Bethlehem Star. Each piece is handmade by me.... with, of course, a little help from my grandmother.
Merry Christmas,
Kevin
